Dental Check-up and tartar removal (dental scaling)

Many people only visit the dentist when they already have a problem or pain. However, prevention is essential for maintaining both oral and general health. Regular dental check-ups every six months and professional tartar removal re important not only for aesthetic reasons but also for ensuring long-term oral and overall health.

Why is the six-month interval important?

The primary purpose of check-ups is to monitor the health of the oral cavity and to detect any changes or issues at an early stage. Six months is a relatively short period in the functioning of a healthy body, making it an ideal timeframe to catch the onset of pathological processes (such as early tooth decay, gingivitis, or mucosal lesions) before they progress. Initial tooth decay often does not cause pain or symptoms, so patients are usually unaware of the issue. However, during a dental check-up, these can be detected, and in the early stages, a small, minimally invasive filling is often sufficient. If left unnoticed for years (sometimes even without symptoms), the same lesion may eventually require root canal treatment or tooth extraction. The same applies to less frequent but more serious conditions, such as cyst formation. Over six months, these typically do not cause major complaints, but over longer periods, they can lead to severe bone destruction, tooth displacement, or significant space-occupying growth that may necessitate head and neck surgery. Regular check-ups enable early detection so that intervention can be carried out with minimal burden for the patient.

Why does tartar need to be removed?

Tartar is not only an aesthetic problem but also poses a serious health risk. The bacteria that colonize tartar can cause inflammation of the gums, which, over time, can lead to periodontal disease. As inflammation progresses, the bone surrounding the teeth can be resorbed, eventually resulting in tooth loss. Gum inflammation and periodontal disease often develop without pain, so patients may be unaware that there is an issue. Symptoms can sometimes include bleeding gums, bad breath, or occasional pain. Tartar and the associated gum inflammation and periodontal disease also act as a source of chronic infection, which can trigger so-called focal infections elsewhere in the body, such as joint problems, cardiovascular diseases, eye conditions, dermatological problems, hair loss, and immunological diseases. As a more serious complication, the bacteria and toxins responsible for periodontal disease can even cause preterm birth and low birth weight in pregnant women.

What is GBT – Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is an advanced version of traditional tartar removal – a much more modern, gentle, and effective method. GBT is a multi-step procedure in which biofilm (a bacterial-rich layer firmly adhering to the tooth surface) is carefully and thoroughly removed using a special technology (airflow), while ultrasonic instruments remove tartar deposits both on the surface and deeper below the gumline. If necessary, a special dye can be used to visualize the biofilm, making it clear (both for the dentist and the patient) which areas need more thorough cleaning to improve oral hygiene.

Benefits of GBT:

  • Gentle and painless: recommended even for patients with sensitive teeth
  • More effective plaque removal: biofilm mapping enables targeted cleaning
  • Aesthetic results: tooth surfaces become smoother, shinier, and even lighter in color
  • Preventive approach: removes not only visible tartar but also biofilm and many of the pathogenic bacteria it contains, helping to delay biofilm reformation

Summary

A six-month check-up and timely tartar removal – especially when performed with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) – not only help maintain a beautiful smile but also contribute to the long-term health of the teeth, gums, oral cavity, and the entire body. This preventive care can save a great deal of pain, time, and expense, so don’t wait until a problem appears!
