A dental microscope is an instrument that allows the dentist to get a magnified view of the teeth and the oral cavity. The degree of magnification usually ranges from 5X to 30X. It is most commonly used for root canal treatment, but can also be used for other dental procedures.

Research has also been done on the effect of magnification: a practitioner working without magnification can make fine movements of 1-1 mm, while the same practitioner at 20X magnification can make movements of only 10-20 microns. So we can say that precision is not so much in the hands as in the eyes.

Of course, a steady hand is also important! The microscopic root canal treatment is closely linked to the microscopic medical chair. Sitting on it, the dentist supports the rough motor joints such as the elbows and shoulders during the treatment, allowing better control of the small muscles and joints (fingers and wrists).

Benefits of microscopic root canal treatment:

• Greater detail and better illumination create a more careful, precise procedure:
  • The periodontium and root canals can be cleaned much better.
  • More precise root fillings can be made.
  • The dental microscope allows more complex dental procedures to be carried out that would be difficult to perform with the naked eye or at lower magnification. This increases the success rate of treatments and reduces the risk of complications: possible cracks, excess root canals, broken instruments, perforations can be diagnosed and treated.
• Less tooth material needs to be removed, reducing the risk of cracks and fractures.
• The duration of a session is usually longer than with a traditional procedure, but fewer sessions are needed.
• High-quality documentation: dental microscopes can be equipped with recording devices that allow for high-resolution images or videos. This not only aids more accurate diagnosis and planning, but also provides the opportunity to document the treatment process and analyse cases afterwards.
• Improved patient communication: the microscope allows the dentist to work with the patient to more easily show and explain problems in the oral cavity and the procedures performed. This improves patient confidence and helps them understand the treatment process.
